Value Stream Mapping Interactive App
Value Stream Mapping is a Lean process of graphically illustrating the movement of materials and information through an organization from supplier to the customer. The purpose is to create a map of the current state of your organization’s supply chain to identify bottlenecks, inefficiencies, or buildup of inventory and take corrective action.
Description of Value Stream Mapping
Value Stream Mapping requires a team of individuals who represent the different functions or areas of the process included on the map to collaborate with a facilitator experienced in creating value stream maps. The first step is to identify the set of products or services under consideration as well as bound the value stream, which typically starts with the supplier and ends with the consumer, or can include the entire supply chain, which would entail starting with the raw materials. Then, map out each process step that shows the different stages a product goes through from inception to distribution. Include the flow of information that is embedded in each operational step, such as how the product is ordered, the communication requirements for suppliers and customers to ensure successful delivery of the product, and any other relevant information that is captured at each step. From there, the team will need to collect data on the performance of each process step, such as inventory or cycle time for making a product, using performance indicators and metrics that are relevant and applicable to the process. This should allow an overall timeline to be developed that tracks total process and lead times, which can reveal where there are delays, rework, or excessive inventory. At this point, the architecture of the map should be complete and a picture of the current state should become apparent. From here, the team should identify what the ideal current state is and develop an action plan for addressing the challenges that were revealed in the mapping process.
