Core Organizational Values Best Practices

The Core Values of a company are the fundamental beliefs upon which a business is based. They are principals which are relied upon to steer interactions both internally among employees and externally with customers. Once they are written, core values need to be demonstrated through leadership role models, rather than just simply being communicated, and should guide interactions across every part of a company, from employee relations and benefits to marketing and sales strategies.

More about Core Organizational Values

Description of Core Organizational Values

Millenials are an important factor when considering Core Values, because they make up a growing number of employees across all sectors. Surveys have shown that millennials would willingly be paid less in order to work for a company whose values closely align with their own. Therefore, it is important to have a formalized set of Company Core Values which are firm and unwavering. Creating Core Values should start with a Brainstorming session. Asking the following questions can help generate ideas for your values:

  • What core values will be important to our customers?
  • What principles should guide our choices?
  • What do we want our company to be known for?
  • How will our values distinguish us from competitors?
  • What qualities do we value in employees?

Once the brainstorming has been done, try to find themes among the ideas that show what is important and what will set the company apart from its competition, both in terms of attracting top employees and gaining customer acceptance and loyalty. Once written and distributed internally, companies are expected to share their values publicly. Letting consumers know what you stand for and how you run your company will go a long way toward gaining customer loyalty and achieving long term success.
