Go-Live Planning Best Practices

A Go-Live Plan is the steps that should be taken before actually implementing a change program. Successful Go-Live Plans require preparation, specific action to be taken, a contingency plan in case one is needed, proper resources, and thorough consideration given to the risks associated with the change. The purpose of having a Go-Live Plan is to help ensure that the actual transition runs smoothly.

More about Go-Live Planning

Description of Go-Live Planning

In order to determine that the organization is ready to “Go Live” with its change program, the following steps should be taken:

  • Prepare – Each person involved in the change program must know their role in the process and should feel ready to carry out their previously assigned responsibilities.
  • Follow-Through – Unless there are unexpected occurrences, the plan should not be changed. This is to avoid having to re-coordinate with all of the other parties involved in the change process.
  • Create a Contingency Plan – It is often the case that unexpected problems will emerge. It is therefore important to think through what some of these issues can be and come up with solutions to address them.
  • Ensure Proper Resources – Ensure that each person involved in the change process knows who holds each type of information so that they can go to the correct individual if need be. Additionally, make sure that each person has all of the materials needed to carry out their tasks.
  • Define the Risks – Carefully think through what problems will be encountered throughout the change process and what can be done about them.
